CHANDIGARH: The stage is set for another tearjerker in the city. Only this one will come with add-ons. From Tuesday, the already soaring price of onion is bound to escalate from Rs 40 per kg in retail to Rs 50 per kg and your packet of milk too will cost more. The petrol and diesel hike is already effective from Monday midnight.
With the BJP's poll slogan 'Achhe Din Aane Wale Hain' still ringing in the ears of people, residents will find money slipping out of their pockets quickly.
Verka will increase the price of milk by Re 1 for 500ml standardized, premium, double toned milk and skimmed milk. Price of standardized milk in 1 litre packing will now go up from Rs 40 to Rs 42. The price of 6 litre packing of standardized and double toned milk will increase by Rs 12. Verka says the hike was needed as milk processing related and other input costs have shot up. If milk will not blow a hole in your monthly budget, onions sure will.
Already selling at Rs 20 and 22 (in wholesale) and Rs 40 (in retail), onion prices will further rise by Rs 5 in wholesale and Rs 10 in retail. "The prices of onions are only going to increase in the coming month as the availability will reduce until the fresh production comes into the market after one and a half months," says Anil Kumar, a wholesale dealer of onions at the vegetable market in Sector 26. He informs that most of the onion is going to southern states. "The demand is more there. It will further increase until Karnataka starts contributing with fresh production," he adds.
Vegetable market superviser Gurminder Singh says weak monsoon and increasing fuel prices will cause another spike in the rate of onions. "In the city, onion comes from Rajasthan, Indore and Nashik. But these days only Rajasthan and Indore are sending onions. Worse, in the coming days, Rajasthan will reduce the quantity as they do not have production, leading to a further hike."
